Rodney Smith bought a gun and got a restraining order against the attackers. When he ran into two of the convicted attackers at a computer lab at South Mountain Community College, his Phoenix criminal lawyer claimed that the men confronted Rodney Smith and punched him in the face. Rodney Smith then pulled out a gun and fired three shots, but two of the shots hit innocent bystanders. The man was then charged with three counts of aggravated assault and 12 counts of endangerment related to the other students in the laboratory at the time of the shooting.
FindLaw states that self-defense is a common legal defense used in court by Phoenix criminal lawyers, as the law states that people have the right to defend themselves from physical injury. In the case of the shooting at South Mountain Community College, Phoenix criminal lawyers argued that the defendant was only trying to defend himself when he fired the gun in the computer lab. The charges that involved Rodney Smith shooting the attackers were dropped from the case and he was able to plead guilty to the other criminal charges.
