A 21-year-old from Mesa has been accused of stealing the identity of a soldier in Iraq to rent an apartment and buy a new car. According to the Arizona Republic, the suspect Richard Schrodt allegedly got a duplicate driver's license in Richard Burke's name. Police say that the suspect knew Richard Burke from high school and knew that he was away in Iraq. Because the two men looked very similar, the suspect was allegedly able to get away with getting the duplicate driver's license from DMV.

However, the case unraveled when the suspect allegedly tried to buy a truck from a Nissan dealership. Richard Burke contacted his mother when he saw that $6,000 was missing from his bank account. The mother then contacted the Nissan dealership after checking up on her son's account and learned that Richard Schrodt was trying to purchase a pickup truck. Detectives then were able to track down the man to a Mesa apartment.

Police say that even after Richard Schrodt was arrested, he still insisted that his last name was Burke. Yet fingerprints have shown otherwise. The suspect was booked into jail on suspicion of three counts of forgery and three counts of identity theft.

Both victims of identity theft and people charged with an identity theft crime may experience a great deal of anxiety when it comes to court proceedings. Yet in Arizona, there are many Phoenix criminal lawyers that can explain the options that an identity theft suspect has in the criminal justice system. A Phoenix criminal defense attorney can also ensure that the defendant's rights are being protected.
